15 year old pretends to be hired by Google

Pretty funny thing happened this afternoon – Tom Vendetta, a 15 year old kid from New Jersey in the US, pretented that he got employed by Google. Easy to do, but it went a bit of a distance and fooled quite a few people, until he posted his apology on his blog.

Certainly a quick and easy way to become famous! He’ll probably really get hired now.

The current top few results for “tom vendetta” (with quotes) on Google are things from Digital Paintball forums. Check it again in a few days/weeks and there’ll be hundreds of results all about him.

Turns out he wants to visit Australia, too. Well, where the bloody hell are you? :)

  1. I’m wondering if this means that Google will start looking at press releases a little differently.

Revisiting Tom’s blog, I see that he just turned 16 on Saturday, which is why it looks like there’s some confusion over his age. I think he handled the aftermath of this really well. I hope he walks away from this with something positive out of the experience. Some of the folks who commented were on the brutal side.

  2. I do think it’s amazing how it got out of hand so quickly, Bill. And yes, he certainly received some not nice comments there – hopefully he takes the positive ones, and doesn’t let the others hurt his self esteem. He’s continuing to post on his blog as people write more about him elsewhere (mainly on Digg).
