So, to catch up on the last few months in the life of Tim. I’ve been:
- Working
- Working
- Holidaying for a bit
- Deciding
- Working
Yep, work has certainly taken up most of my time. Before you call me a workaholic, I must state that I thoroughly enjoy this job, and don’t have many other commitments at this point in time. If I continue working a potentially slightly excessive – but balanced – work week now, and then scale right back when I decide to start a family, I’m happy with that. I do know though that there’s no way I’m working much more than 40 hours a week once I’ve settled down.
Work is great because I’m able to learn new things every single day. I’m currently involved quite a bit in HR, and boy is it hard to find good staff with the current low unemployment levels. Granted, we are quite picky, but it is a bit of an annoying predicament to be in. The main problem I’m seeing is people who decide to ‘try’ IT by doing it for 4 years at uni, and then go out into the workforce and discover that it’s really not what they thought. It’s a little sad, because it would be hard – if not impossible – for those people to get a good job now. My advice – if you’re going to uni, at least try to work in your industry while you’re at uni so you can see what the real world is like.
So, apart from work, I’ve been making decisions. The rest of my family is moving to Thailand later this year, so that obviously puts me in the position of deciding whether to go or whether to stay. In that I’m well rooted in a job and a church and friendship groups here at the moment, I have decided to stay. I’ll certainly miss my family – I don’t think I’ve ever gone more than a few weeks without seeing them – but we do all have to grow up at some point. All of this was the main reason I chose to move out of home late last year – to get the ‘real world’ experience first, so I’m not on my own once they fly to the other side of the world.
And what else? Holidaying? Well, there wasn’t much of that unfortunately (most of my leave will be taken up by Thailand later this year), but I did get a chance to see the extended family over December/January. My young cousins certainly are growing up very quickly, and are quite photogenic! (Photos to be posted in the near future).
So there’s the latest rundown; hope that wasn’t too boring.
