In all my time off work at the moment, one of the new things I’ve taken on is announcing at 1 Way FM, Canberra’s Christian radio station.
I recorded an aircheck of part of my 3 hour slot yesterday, which you can listen to here:

Airchecks in the radio industry are often recorded for the purposes of critique. I’m quite happy with how this one turned out, considering this was my second time on air by myself, but after listening to it I have come up with a few points of improvement:
- I sometimes speak too quiet (or have the mic turned down too low), and occasionally almost mumble a few words
- There are lots of ums and ahs
- I could start talking sooner at the end of songs, during the outros rather than waiting right till the end
I’ve noticed I also seem to say ‘intrested’ rather than ‘interested’. But I’m wondering, is this just personal preference (sort of like the differences between how ‘garage’, ‘adult’ and ‘either’ are pronounced), or is pronouncing the ‘e’ the correct way of doing it?

Brilliant mate. I agree with your own appraisal, cutting down the ums & ahs is really important and is an art that comes over time and practice. Love your work, mate
Hi Tim,
My name is Paul Thompson, and I work in radio (very casualy) mere in Melbourne, Victoria.
With airchecks, Stn PD’s dont want a whole lol of “mindless drivell” or too much music (3-5 sec of intro/outro).
They want to hear YOUR voice…….sooo, show em’ what you can do with it (And dont forget to try to “PROJECT” your voice……and talk as if you were talking to one or two people face to face, (SMOOTH FLOW OF TALKING)
otherwise you will sound a little robotic with your voice style.
(ie: it-is-six-past-three-on-one-way-fm)
But most of all………..enjoy what you do.
GOOD LUCK
Regards,
Paul Thompson
