I’m quite tired and don’t really feel like putting thought into a blog post, so this is really just a short post to bring attention to a NEWS.com.au poll today: “Are Kevin Rudd and John Howard right to oppose gay marriage?”. The question was brought on by Kevin Rudd’s announced committal today to gay marriage remaining unrecognised if Labor is elected. John Howard holds the same view, although from what I’ve heard seems more committed to it than Rudd – in that Rudd is willing to make a few comprises in some areas.
Anyway, the poll. Being a web based poll we of course can’t place a high level of reliability on it because it is fairly easy for anyone who wants to rig it to do so. But for the most part, I was surprised at the result. As of right now:

Now Howard has said that most Australians don’t want gay marriage to be given the same legal right as heterosexual marriage. I’ve always held the (untested) view that it’s the other way around. My own opinion is that gay marriage should not be recognised. But according to this poll, the Australian public is pretty much divided 50/50 – there’s a difference of only 69 people (it was closer earlier). It’s a closer contest than any political opinion poll this year.
It was news to me, that’s for sure.
You can participate in the poll here.

I just voted and it’s now yes 41% no 58% so it seems your view that most Aussies do want gay marriage allowed is correct.
Hmm… even more so now, 34% to yes and 65% to no.
