Why Instagram is so cool

There's a new social networking tool on the horizon. And when I say new, it has actually been around for 10 months, but of course just hasn't yet gone "mainstream". It's Instagram - and it's growing rapidly, with over four million users worldwide. To be that well used there must be something about it, and I tend to think there is: because Instagram has inspired my own search for creativity.

A healthy democracy needs the freedom to disagree

The debate for gay marriage is raging in Australia – and this week marks seven years since the Marriage Amendment Act 2004 was passed. Equal marriage rallies were held around Australia over the weekend and today the National Marriage Day rally is being held at Parliament House. But this political debate, more than others, has been turning nasty.

The media gets a hold of my tram love note

On Monday, I posted a picture on Facebook and Twitter of a note I'd been given by a random girl on the tram. The note - which you can see on the right - was picked up by the media today!

Lennox v Singer: Is there a God?

One believes in God, one doesn't. This is how the debate unfolded.

How Vienna changed the world

For another month-and-a-half, the National Gallery in Victoria is exhibiting works from Vienna, Austria from a period of rapid change at the turn of the 20th century. I'm new to the appreciating-art world, and this exhibition caught my attention because of its byline: "A little over 100 years ago in Vienna, Austria, a group of radical young creators and thinkers overturned all the rules and created a brave new world."

Tweaking Melbourne’s rail lines

Melbourne's rail network has several problems. One of them is that you can't get trains to and from places like Doncaster, Rowville or the Airport, and another is that the only option for transport outside of the commuter-ideal is to use slow busses. This is my ambitious and idealistic plan.

The day-to-day effect of depression

If you haven't experienced depression before nor come across someone who has - you may be surprised to know that there's probably people right under your nose who suffer from it. I'm one of them. Or at least I was. Maybe I still am. And some would no doubt be surprised to learn that.

On banking and mobiles – my brands

I'm not usually a quick changer of brands when something goes wrong. Partly due to the hassle of changing but also because I like to stick it out and give a chance for mistakes to be rectified. I've neglected to change banks when frustration arose, but recently decided enough was enough with one particular mobile network!

Mitigating technical disaster: meet the cloud

I realised that through mucking around with various online services over the years – and especially this year – I’ve come up with an impromptu arrangement that pretty much mitigates my life from technical disaster. That's disasters such as hard disk crashes, computers being stolen, or even my home burning down.

Exploring creativity – a workshop

I think I’m creative. But I’m not so sure how to harness that creativity. Sometimes I find it… for a short while. But most of the time I sit there knowing I have something to express, not knowing how to express it. So a housemate and I have decided to run... a creative cluster.
